Top award for bar revamp at Royal Albert Hall

A decorating company has been recognised at the Painting and Decorating Association’s (PDA) 35th awards ceremony for their ornate redecoration work of the 1871 Bar at the Royal Albert Hall.

Campbell Smith and Co Ltd undertook the project that won the Highly Decorative category and were presented with the Supreme Winner title at Plaisterers’ Hall, London.

Senior Contract Manager at Campbell Smith Tina Roots led the project which started in February and was carried out across the month.

Roots said: “I don’t think we have got many words as it’s still a lot to take in.

“Since it was the 130th anniversary for the PDA, it was a sense of pride that we were acknowledged and rewarded for the project and our efforts.

“It allowed us to showcase our expertise and passion within the industry, it makes us proud.”

Campbell Smith describes the 1871 bar as a mix of traditional and modern elements that create an electric space.

The panel of judges from the Institute for Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) commended the quality of the redecoration and the level of service, especially given the challenging nature of the work.

Roots said: “The biggest challenge was the square paper on the rounded ceiling.

“It’s not something you often see, but it was something we overcame, and it looks fantastic.”

Trophies were presented by PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie who was joined by Paul Coward, President of ICWCI and John Kourtoulos, UK & Ireland Sales Director at AkzoNobel, the main sponsor of the awards.

Ogilvie said: “This is a landmark year both for the PDA and the Premier Trophy Awards, so our very special congratulations go to all the team at Campbell Smith and Co Ltd.

“The winning projects demonstrate the highest standards our trade has to offer, so to be declared Supreme Winner 2024, really is a seal of approval.”

The company hopes to continue their relationship with the Royal Albert Hall.

Roots said: “We have been working closely with Royal Albert Hall for some time.

“We have further work coming up with them in the future.

“We’ll soon be doing all of the boxes within the hall itself.”

As a member of the PDA since 2002 and now part of the Cousins Group, Campbell Smith continues to follow in their footsteps of success, having also won the Premier Trophy Award in the Highly Decorative category in 2022.

Since its establishment in 1873, they have provided both specialist decorating services and industrial work across a variety of buildings, including everything from schools to palaces.
