The QPR pre-match poem, ‘Born Blue & White’, aired consistently since the 2019/20 season, was revamped on Saturday in memory of the writer who died of Covid.
Dean McKee was just 28 when he died in April 2020, and his performance of the poem was shown on the big screen at Matrade Loftus Road at last Saturday’s game against Millwall.
The revamped view shows McKee performing the poem but overlays critical moments from QPR’s football history.
A fan said: “I am in favour of adding additional video content to Dean’s amazing piece as our history grows.”
Another fan said they loved that current footage has been incorporated with the old, which depicts the history, culture and community of QPR.
The club said: “The poem depicts what it means to be a QPR fan, the high and lows of following the club, how special playing fixtures at Loftus Road is for our fans and players, what the club means to its local area and also celebrates some of the players who have been lucky enough to wear the club’s famous blue and white hoops.”
Dean’s mum Jayne said: “Dean and us, his family, are very proud of what he did.
“QPR have done him proud and he will live on through them forever.”
The club said: “We wanted to give the video fresh impetus but keep Dean central to it, to revamp the ever-evolving matchday experience at Loftus Road.”
On QPR’s Facebook account fans have commented: “Magnificently beautiful and truly what we stand for as a club and supporters, also that Dean made a true masterpiece.”
QPR said: “Supporters were pleased with both the final product and, crucially, that Dean’s family were central to the revamp.”
This reiterates the idea that QPR is a family community under the blue and white hoops.
Although the game ended in a draw, goosebumps were felt across the stands pre-match, according to fans.
