More than £2,000 worth of goods from Oxford Street candy shop incinerated

A candy shop on Oxford Street has had £2,800 worth of goods incinerated after selling more than 600 illegal items.

The incineration comes after a Trading Standards raid in which Westminster City Council’s Environmental Health team had seized American cereals, crisps and fizzy drinks.

The goods seized on September 6 were not labelled in English, meaning customers and consumers were not able to check for ingredients on the products nor were they able to check for sell-by dates or allergens.

The leader of Westminster City Council Adam Hug said: “We are continuing to make the lives of unscrupulous traders a nightmare through regular enforcement action.”

The council said that the shop, which has not been named, were also found to have sold carcinogenic American sweets back in February.

Mr Hug warned that there would be more raids on the shops in the coming weeks.

A competitor to the brand, Melt Chocolate, who operate legally in Oxford Street, were asked what they made of a rival candy shop selling illegal goods in the same area

Customer service assistant Andrea said: “I don’t think we would call a candy shop selling illegal goods a competitor.”

In the past three months, alone 2,374 non-compliant products were destroyed from the premises.

These products included Swedish Fish and Hot Tamales sweets, all of which are banned in the UK.
