Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer

Labour tighten grip in north west London and take Boris Johnson’s old seat

Holborn and St Pancras MP Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister, with his Labour Party sweeping across north west London.

The Labour Party leader comfortably secured his re-election with 64.5% of the votes in his constituency, before heading to Downing Street to take over the keys from Rishi Sunak.

Starmer secured 18,884 votes, with independent candidate Andrew Feinstein in second with 7,312 (18.9%).

It was part of a good night for Labour who gained four seats from the Conservatives in Finchley and Golders Green, Chipping Barnet, Hendon (by just 15 votes) and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s old Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat.

Danny Beales is the new MP there and he said: “This is my home constituency. I grew up here, and I was motivated by my experience of being homeless here from Hillingdon.

“There’s a general sense that change is needed, with rising bills and housing prices, a declining quality of life, and cuts in customer services.

“People are fed up for getting empty promises for 14 years about new hospitals. I’m determined to deliver new hospitals in London.

“I’m determined to work with our health secretary from day one in order to build new hospitals.

“The Labour government will prioritise to get family finances back on track.”

Labour however couldn’t stop former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn winning Islington North as an Independent.

Corbyn gained 49.2% of the vote ahead of Labour’s Praful Nargund.

Corbyn said: “My job in the  Parliament will be as it’s always been, to deal with the individual problem that many of our people face, but to speak up where necessary in criticism, in order to bring about the social changes that this country needs, and my constituency needs.

“I’m humbled and proud and very grateful to the people of Islington North, who I’ve represented for so long, and have taught me so much.”

Labour also held on to Brent West, Brent East, Hampstead and Highgate, Ealing North, Ealing Central and Acton, Ealing Southall, Southgate and Wood Green, Enfield North, Edmonton and Winchmore Hill, Hornsey and Friern Barnet, Tottenham, Harrow West, Hayes & Harlington, Feltham and Heston, Brentfod and Isleworth, Islington South and Finsbury and Queen’s Park and Maida Vale.

The Conservatives did hold on to Harrow East with Bob Blackman and Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner with David Simmons.
