University College London (UCL) has joined the UK’s largest regional space cluster, Space South Central (SSC) as an academic partner.
UCL will work alongside some of the UK’s largest universities, including University of Portsmouth, University of Southampton, and University of Surrey.
SSC is comprised of over 170 diverse entrepreneurial companies, most notably Airbus, BAE Systems, and Lockheed Martin.
The director of Space South Central enterprise network Louise Butt said: “We are delighted that UCL has chosen to partner with Space South Central to support, enhance and benefit from our cluster initiatives.”
UCL’s partnership with Space South Central presents many opportunities for the sector in Hampshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight, and for the wider UK space industry.
Space South Central acts as a hub for four organisations with strong industrial links in the space industry:
The South Coast Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (SCCoE), a representative and ambassador for the South Coast space sector.
The Surrey and Hampshire Space Hub supported by Enterprise M3 LEP and a previous recipient of UK Space Agency regional cluster funding.
The University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG), a world leading research centre in astrophysics with a strong reputation in cosmology theory, complex data analysis and space science experiments.
The Surrey Space Centre (SSC) at the University of Surrey, which has an extensive track record in satellite manufacturing and home of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL).
The space industry is a growing sector that is generating an income of £16.5B on an annual basis and employs around 48,000 people in the UK.
