A Michelin-Starred chef has helped opened a restaurant in Primrose Hill with the aim of tackling homelessness.
Adam Simmons, along with Michael Brown and Alex Brown, opened Home Kitchen in September to confront the challenges faced by charity Soup Kitchen London, an organisation which Michael and Alex are both proud members and which Simmons volunteers at.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Soup Kitchen London remained open while others were closed and demand for the charity rose to the extent the workload exceeded staff capacity.
This gave rise to the idea of Home Kitchen, a restaurant which employs 16 homeless people.
Michael explained that Home Kitchen also aims to combat invisible homelessness, which is a social phenomenon where people who experience homelessness may not be visible on the streets or in official statistics.
It includes anyone sofa surfing, living in temporary accommodation, or living in hostels.
Michael said: “Resilience is one of those core qualities that wouldn’t spring to mind if you asked most people what a homeless person was.
“But if you think about anyone who’s is homeless, particularly rough sleepers, you must be resilient to get through that.”
