London law firm backs trainee with orchestral sponsorship

A London law firm is supporting a trainee’s passion for music with an orchestral sponsorship.

Bishop and Sewell LLP, a firm specialising in personal, property and commercial law, is sponsoring London Phoenix Orchestra’s Spring and Summer concert season in 2023.

Steven Smithers, one of the firm’s trainee solicitors and a member of the orchestra, will participate as a solo pianist.

Smithers said: “The orchestra offers a fantastic forum for busy professionals to come together to rehearse, play and enjoy making music each week.

“Music is a real passion of mine, and I am very fortunate that Bishop & Sewell has been so supportive while I continue my training.”

The Spring Concert is being held at St John’s in Smith Square on Wednesday 26 April from 7.30pm.

The sponsorship will support the orchestra’s activities, allowing audiences to enjoy the experience of live classical music at some of London’s most prestigious venues.

Bishop & Sewell’s senior partner, Mark Chick, said: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with the London Phoenix Orchestra, and we are particularly looking forward to welcoming our clients and friends to two special concerts in the coming months.”

The London Phoenix Orchestra, originally named The Insurance Orchestra, was founded in 1924 to provide insurance industry workers with a chance to regularly play and enjoy music.

These days, the orchestra includes members from a variety of career paths and backgrounds, such as music students, and has become one of the London’s most well-known amateur orchestras.

Smithers is set to play Shostakovich’s “Piano Concerto No.2”.

Other performances will include Smetana’s overture to “The Bartered Bride” and Dvořák’s “Sixth Symphony”.

The London Phoenix Orchestra will commence its Summer Concert at Cadogan Hall on Tuesday 27 June, featuring the works of Poulenc, Satie and Stravinsky.
