Camden marks its 60th anniversary with a major street party on Monday 5 May, bringing together residents, organisations and visitors for a day of free music, food, and culture.
Camden at 60: The Big Street Party celebrates six decades since the creation of the London Borough of Camden in 1965, when Hampstead, Holborn and St Pancras merged to form the borough known today for its creativity, diversity and cultural influence.
The street party is set to take place along the famed Camden High Street, which will be pedestrianised as part of a trial starting on Saturday 3 May.
Councillor Sabrina Francis, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Young People and Culture said: “The Big Street Party is our amazing opportunity to show everyone how we have been able to reclaim this busy street, with its iconic markets, music venues, and businesses, and make the most out of this new public space.”
Visitors to the event can expect live performances from some of the area’s musicians, street food from around the world, family-friendly workshops and exhibitions which highlight the borough’s rich social and cultural history.
A cross-section of Camden institutions are taking part in the celebration, while community groups and youth organisations from across the borough will also lead activities and performances.
As part of the celebration of the borough’s Irish heritage, The London Bodhrán Band will be performing.
Band founder Ruairi Glasheen said: “It’s incredibly exciting to have the opportunity to play on the iconic Camden High Street — a place that holds so much energy and history.
“For us in the London Bodhrán Band, it’s a real thrill to bring our rhythms to the heart of it all.
“Given Camden’s long-standing connection with the Irish community, so many of whom lived, worked, and made music here, it feels particularly special.”
Since its formation, Camden has built a reputation as one of London’s most iconic and dynamic boroughs.
Known for its music scene, it is home to iconic venues such as the Roundhouse and Electric Ballroom, and played a part in launching the careers of many UK artists.
The 60th anniversary celebration aims to reflect those elements, offering not just a day of entertainment but a chance for residents to explore the borough’s legacy and look toward its future.
