Wembley gym offers free International Women’s Day boxing

UBX Wembley will host two free boxing sessions in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police for all women across the Borough of Brent.

The sessions on 4 and 6 March, taking place from 4-5pm, aim to introduce women to the sport, and connect and celebrate women across the community.

General manager Izzy Huber believes UBX erases many of the anxieties people typically have with boxing.

Huber said: “It’s not a traditional boxing gym, there’s no ring and you won’t be hit in the face.

“You can come and learn how to box without the scary aspect of boxing.”

The gym opened in February 2024 and has grown to 150 members, 74 of which are women.

Its workouts see participants engage in strength training, group circuits and pad work.

UBX’s strong community led to the Met reaching out to the gym to spread awareness about issues in Brent and the decision to collaborate with the police for the International Women’s Day event was due to a desire to open up the space for more women.

Huber said: “This event is not only an opportunity to try something new and active but to also have open discussions in a safe environment.

“Boxing is also a great way to help boost confidence. Although we don’t recommend it as a method of self defence, it can definitely help people feel safer.”

UBX aims to invite as many women as possible to experience the transformative effects of boxing by removing cost barriers

Their ethos of empowering women begins from the moment a client enquires about a session.

Huber said: “Our staff believe that support begins before a client even enters the gym.

“We make sure to call ahead of a session to answer any queries or concerns.

“Our main objective is to reassure our clients by creating an incredibly supportive and friendly environment.”
