Junior star Johnson happy to continue washing outfit at Wimbledon

Flora Johnson only bought herself one outfit for Wimbledon – and will happily keep on washing it as she unexpectedly navigates her way through the rounds.

The British junior, 17, continued her girls’ singles journey as she beat Slovakian player Mia Pohánková 7-5 6-2 to book her spot in the third round.

Johnson, who was awarded a wildcard into the draw, had stunned seventh seed Alena Kovačková in her opening encounter and followed it up on Wednesday by improbably keeping her SW19 hopes alive.

The Richmond-based teenager arrived at the All England Club with minimal expectations and admits she only purchased one white dress to play in at her home Grand Slam.

But after completing a remarkable run to the last 16, Johnson laughed: “I only have one outfit, so I have to keep washing it every evening!

“I’m super happy and anything from now is just a bonus – I came with no real expectations and just want to enjoy it out there.

“All my family, aunties, uncles and parents are out there supporting me, which is nice – I live locally so it’s perfect.

“All my friends are supporting me, which is great.”

Johnson looked in trouble on Tuesday as her and Pohánková were forced off due to rain with her opponent in the lead.

But after returning the following morning, she regathered her composure to turn the tables on the Slovak and motor towards a convincing straight sets victory.

Johnson will next face Belgian No.10 seed Jeline Vandromme for a place in the quarter-finals.

And the British star added: “I feel really good – I had to stay focused and zone in.

“The break actually helped me a bit – it’s all to do with the momentum.

“I was down, she was serving for the set and I wasn’t playing great, but I came back, played really well and finished off good points.

“I’m super surprised at my results – anything else is genuinely just a plus.”
